Terms of Use
The deal
GoodCents is a teaching tool. The money in it is not money. Beyond that, these terms are mostly the ordinary ones.
Last updated 31 August 2026
The one that matters. Whatever a school names its currency, it has no cash value. It cannot be withdrawn, redeemed for money, transferred between schools, or exchanged for anything except what your own school chooses to offer. The investing feature is a simulation: no real securities are bought or sold, and nothing in the app is financial advice.
1. Who these terms are with
GoodCents is built and operated by Andrew Jahan ("we", "us"). These terms apply to everyone who uses the app — students, teachers and administrators. Using GoodCents means accepting them.
Where a school arranges GoodCents for its students, the school agrees to these terms on behalf of its staff and students.
2. Your account
You sign in with a Google account, normally the one your school issued. Keep it secure, and don't sign in as someone else. Tell your teacher or administrator if you think someone has used your account.
Your school controls who is on its roster, what role you have, and what you can do.
3. Classroom currency has no cash value
Balances in GoodCents are classroom points used to teach how an economy works. They are not money, not a payment instrument, not a security, and not a cryptocurrency, whatever a school chooses to call its currency.
- They cannot be redeemed for cash, transferred to another school, or moved off the app.
- Their worth is entirely whatever a school decides to offer in its own store.
- A school may adjust, reverse or reset balances — that is a normal part of running a classroom economy, and staff actions are recorded in the ledger.
- We do not guarantee that any balance will persist, buy anything in particular, or carry over between terms.
No real money passes through GoodCents. We never collect payment details.
4. The investing simulation
The exchange uses real market prices so the lesson is real, but every trade is simulated. No securities, commodities or cryptocurrencies are actually bought or sold, and no student holds any real asset or claim.
Prices come from third-party data and may be delayed, incomplete or wrong. Nothing in GoodCents — including any chart, indicator, ratio or figure — is financial advice or a recommendation to do anything with real money.
5. What schools are responsible for
A school using GoodCents is responsible for:
- Having the authority to enrol its students, and giving any notice or obtaining any consent its own rules and the law require.
- The accuracy of what it enters — rosters, attendance, awards and fines.
- How it configures the economy: pay rates, taxes, prices, interest, and what its store actually gives students.
- Honouring what it sells. If a school's store offers a homework pass, the school provides it — we don't.
- Who it grants staff permissions to, and what they do with them.
6. Acceptable use
Don't:
- Try to break, bypass or probe the app's security, or access data that isn't yours.
- Use someone else's account, or help someone else use yours.
- Use GoodCents to harass anyone, or put abusive content in notes, names or requests.
- Attempt to manipulate the economy through exploits or bugs rather than by playing it. If you find a bug that mints currency, tell your teacher — genuinely, that is the more interesting thing to have done.
- Copy, resell or redistribute the app.
7. Availability
GoodCents is offered as-is and as-available. It is a small operation, not a utility. There may be downtime, maintenance, and changes to features. We aim to keep the data safe — the database is backed up nightly — but we do not promise uninterrupted service.
8. Ownership
We own the app, its design and its name. Schools keep ownership of the content they put in: rosters, rules, store items and the records their use generates. We use that content only to provide GoodCents to that school, as described in the Privacy Policy.
9. Ending your use
A student can close their account in the app under Me → Close account. A school can remove a student, or stop using GoodCents and ask us to delete its data.
We may suspend access that threatens the security or integrity of the service, or that breaks these terms.
10. Disclaimers and liability
GoodCents is provided without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, for lost data beyond restoring what our backups hold, or for anything a school does or fails to do with its own classroom economy — including honouring store items.
Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
11. Changes
We may update these terms. The date at the top changes when we do, and continuing to use GoodCents after that means accepting the update.
